Topics of Forthcoming Issues

Spring/Summer 2008
Democratic Civic Engagement (combined issue)

How can the academy engage students in their learning today to help them grow as engaged citizens for tomorrow? Building on the AAC&U Network meeting on this theme, this issue examines advancing and measuring civic engagement learning outcomes. It focuses on democratic civic engagement rather than service and in what some call civic agency.

Fall 2008
Toward Intentionality and Integration

AAC&U has recommended that institutions become more intentional and integrative. This issue will explore how institutions are doing this—aligning institutional practices with educational goals, making clear to students what the important outcomes of college are, and developing opportunities for them to integrate and apply what they are learning. Features will include institutions involved in the LEAP Initiative, those who have attended the Greater Expectations Institutes, and curricular models emerging from AAC&U’s public health institute partnership with the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research.

Winter 2009
Teaching Outside of the Comfort Zone

This issue will address specific challenges faculty are facing in the classroom today. It will examine issues related to teaching outside of one’s discipline, developing more active and hands-on learning opportunities, addressing controversial issues in the classroom, or and addressing issues that challenge students’ religious beliefs.
