National Council for Languages and International Studies
The National Council for Languages and International Studies (NCLIS) is an organization
formed by 12 national language associations in the late 1970s to engage in public advocacy
on behalf of international education. NCLIS now represents 60 national and regional
organizations from all areas of the language field, including the major and less- commonly
taught languages, including English and English as a Second Language, bilingual education,
the classics, linguistics, translation, research, exchanges, international business
education, and educational technology. NCLIS shares a governance structure and
professional staff with the Joint
National Committee for Languages (JNCL), a non-profit organization begun in 1976 that
serves as a point of reference for the planning of national language policies.
